NLC met with Foreign Minister BISHOP on New Colombo Plan and SAFETYCard program

Summary: On 4 December 2013, Australian Foreign Affairs Minister Julie BISHOP met with the executive team of the SAFETYCard program in her parliamentary office in Canberra.

On 4 December 2013, Australian Foreign Affairs Minister Julie BISHOP met with the executive team of the SAFETYCard program in her parliamentary office in Canberra.

Chinese Association National President SHANG J. Master, FECCA Deputy Chairman ALEXANDER Mithun, National Liaison Committee (NLC) Executive Director CHOO Mark and Overseas Students Association (OSA) National President SUN ShuYang attended.

The two sides discussed about international student safety and the concern of Australian student safety under the New Colombo Plan.

Minister BISHOP supported the safety of International Student Community when she was Education Minister under Howard Government, she met with NLC representatives in 2007.             

Mr Shang served as NLC public officer on behalf of the Multicultural Community. The SAFETYCard program was introduced by Chinese Students Association (CSA) as the national safety program back in 1988. 

Mr Shang stated that the Multicultural Community accounted for 20% of Australian population. Chinese, Indian and Muslim Communities joined forces to support the SAFETYCard program.  

Minister Bishop stated that the community operation model of the SAFETYCard Program can help Australian Government promote the safety of Australian students studying in Asian countries under the New Colombo Plan.

Mr Shang reconfirmed that the Multicultural Community would fully support Australian Government to implement the safety program for Australian students studying in Asia. A
fter the meeting, Minister Bishop started her official visit to Indonesia and China.

The New Colombo Plan will commence in 2014 with a pilot phase in Japan, Indonesia, Singapore and Hong Kong before its official launch in 2015 to cover other Asian Countries. T
he SAFETYCard Program supported by the Multicultural Community will cover Australian students under the Plan.
